Psalm 42:1-2
As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and felt like you haven’t had a drink water for a month straight?
If you’ve grown up in the church, you probably know or at least have heard the hymn that stems from Psalm 42. It is one that can stick in your head, and you may even find yourself humming it throughout the day. When I picture the imagery behind a deer panting or a body deeply thirsting, it is one of weariness and desperation.
When was the last time you felt like you desperately needed God, or your soul hungered and thirsted to be with Him? Maybe it has been too long, so long that our soul has forgotten what it feels like to be truly filled.
As you fast today, there is a direct reflection of worldly hunger/thirst that can and should be used as a reminder of your soul’s thirst. I would encourage you to lean into the day, the discomfort, and think of Psalm 42 as a mirrored reminder of your longing to God.
