Psalm 33:6-7

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; He puts the deeps in storehouses.

These two sentences are intended to make our jaws drop. Go outside on a clear night with this passage pulled up on your phone and look up at the starry sky. Then read verse 6. By God’s WORD He made everything you see there. He SPOKE those heavenly bodies into existence… placed them into orbits… established them in their courses, and organized all that into a system that is better than clockwork.

There’s no better word to describe His creative ability than “AWESOME!”

Then there’s the ocean. We don’t have one of those nearby, but we can all bring the image of a long beach with a pounding surf immediately to mind. Looking out over that vast expanse of water makes you feel small, every time. It’s supposed to. Because in feeling so small, we are able to recognize that God (the one who made it) is so BIG. He can manhandle the seas of the world like legos in a toybox (read verse 7 again… try to picture it).

Why is all of this important to ponder?

Because when we do, we begin to realize that God isn’t tame, or tepid, or to be trifled with. He’s not manageable… at all. Yet, He instructs us to seek Him, to long to be near Him, to find in Him everything we need.

As you seek Him today, stop to smell the roses (or the coffee), to let the sunshine warm your face, to feel the wind (strong as it may be) and then to worship the one who made all of those things.

Let yourself sink down into smallness as your heart rises up into the immensity of your God.
