1 John 2:29

If you know that He is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.

I don’t like being wrong. If you like to be wrong, then you must be wrong a lot. But most of us would agree that we like being right.

I like to be right, but daily, I am wrong. My sin has left me in a place of unrighteousness. I have broken God’s law, and nothing I do can make it right. No amount of works can fix what I have broken. As Paul says, “For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor” (Gal 2:18).

So I look to the one who is righteous for my redemption. I look to Jesus Christ. Only he is right before God because he kept the law perfectly for my sake.

I practice righteousness because Jesus practiced righteousness. I cannot look to worldly things to fix what I have broken. I cannot show God my good works and expect things to be mended. Every day, I need Jesus.

When John says, “everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him,” he is referring to the desires of our hearts. I am able to practice righteousness because he has made me righteous. I cannot practice what I do not have. Praise be to God for such grace!

Christian, be thankful for the righteousness that Christ has laid upon you. Walk in his ways because he has given you a new life through the work of the Holy Spirit.
